Whilst the wine growing areas of Beaune and Chablis are well known and offer countless delights both for eating and drinking,
Burgundy also has a wealth of châteaux, medieval towns, abbeys and unspoilt villages.
For "days out" visit Vézelay with its hilltop basilica, the châteaux of Bazoches, Epoisses, Tanlay and Commorin and the village of Flavigny where "Chocolat" was filmed.
Wander around the quaint old towns of Semur and Saulieu, experience the calm in the exquisite monastery of Fontenay; and for all kinds of outdoor activities during the summer such as, riding, canoeing, fishing, walking visit the Morvan National Park.

Market day in Avallon
|
The small medieval fortified town of Avallon, with its cobbled streets and beautiful architecture is 9 km away from our village of Montréal. On its outskirts there is a supermarket, while in the centre there are a variety of family owned shops and cafés, restaurants and bars. All year round on a Saturday morning there is a local produce market in the ancient covered hall, which spreads over into the adjoining square and streets. Here you can buy the famous local cheese from Epoisses, smoked chicken, all kinds of sausages, meats and fish, fresh vegetable, and fruits in season.

Staying in Montréal offers a relaxing rural and varied holiday with the option of an easy day trip to Paris or Disneyworld by fast train from Montbard (half an hour´s drive + free parking). Or just over an hour´s drive away is Guedelon the construction site of a castle, being built over 25 years using authentic mediaeval methods. A really fascinating experience for all ages and highly recommended.
There are lots of antique shops in the area, and each Sunday during the summer local villages hold their "vide greniers" (attic sales in the streets) where you can find tempting bargains and experience bugundian hospitality.
Throughout the year there are numerous events and festivals. The bar in our village has jazz nights some Wednesday evenings during the summer, and the church has a variety of both classical and popular concerts during the season.
